TIMONIUM, Md. (AP) — The mother of a University of Virginia lacrosse player slain by her boyfriend is urging Congress to create a day to increase awareness of dating violence.

Sharon Love, the mother of Yeardley Love, joined with Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., on Tuesday to announce legislation that would designate May 3 of each year as "National One Love Day."

Yeardley Love, a Cockeysville native, died on May 3, 2010, after she was beaten by her ex-boyfriend, fellow Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely V. Huguely, of Chevy Chase, Md., was convicted of second-degree murder. He's serving a 23-year sentence in a Virginia prison.

Ruppersberger's office notes that one-third of all female homicide victims are killed by husbands, ex-husbands or boyfriends.
