Increasing dangers from snow, ice left on cars

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Connecticut has joined New Jersey in requiring that motorists remove snow and ice from their vehicles.

Police in Connecticut are aggressively targeting drivers who ignore the so-called 'ice missile' law.  At least 230 tickets have been issued to drivers since the law took effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

Summonses begin at $75 plus $45 in various service charges.  At $120 per summons, the state has taking in more than $27,000 since the year began, according to the AP.

In New Jersey, fines begin at $25-$75, but go up to $200 and above depending on any damage or injury.

Leaving snow on a car roof or hood is a potentially dangerous move.  Braking could cause all the snow on the roof to come sliding down onto the windshield impairing the driver's ability to view the road.

Snow can fall off on to another car potentially causing a crash.

But not all jurisdictions in the region are on the anti-snow and ice bandwagon. There is no law in New York City that requires the removal of snow or ice from a vehicle.

Only eight out of 50 states have laws about removing snow on vehicles.
