George Mason University to offer gender-neutral housing option for students

Posted: Updated:
FAIRFAX, Va. - A growing number of U.S. colleges and universities offer gender-neutral housing for students, and this fall, George Mason University will join that list.  The university will allow male and female students to live together in dorm rooms on campus.

GMU refers to it as flexible housing, and it will be offered for groups of four or six students who currently reside on campus, and who would normally qualify for housing in the fall. Housing officials have been looking into the policy for years.

Many have viewed offering such arrangements as a way for colleges to make sure students who are uneasy about rooming with someone of the same sex can be both comfortable and safe.  It also paves the way for romantic couples of different sexes to live together on-campus.
