Bad weather causes blood shortage at local Red Cross

Posted: Updated:
Every 2 seconds across the U.S., someone needs a blood donation and the American Red Cross provides about 40 percent of the nation's blood supply at thousands of hospitals and transfusion centers.

The group typically sees a decline in donations this time of year, but bad weather in recent weeks has compounded that and is now causing some very real challenges.

The local Red Cross is in particular in need right now of O positive and negative, as well as A and B negative and platelets, which only have a shelf life of about five days.

Thirty-eight percent of the population is eligible to donate, but only about 10 percent do, and the group is hoping if they put out this call for help, they'll hear from some of them.
