Hundreds of cars towed in DC during snowstorm

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

It's a mess for hundreds of drivers in the District who left their cars on snow emergency routes and had them towed during the recent winter storm.

230 cars were towed and it was so much to handle that the city had to bring in 12 private towing companies to help.

Some frustrated drivers found out on Friday that just because their car was towed in D.C., it didn’t mean the vehicle was in a D.C. government lot.

When Miquel Benitez left work at the Poste restaurant in Penn Quarter, he got a rude surprise.

“Literally when I got off of work, it was gone,” he said.

Benitez had parked on 7th Street -- one of D.C.’s snow emergency routes. His car was towed, but the problem was he didn't know where it was towed to.

"Vehicles are towed during the snow emergency because of the simple fact that we have to clean the streets,” said Cynthia Jones, who runs the impound lot for the District.

So like lots of the other snow-towed car owners, Benitez headed to D.C.'s impound lot to find his car.

"We can look up the information on your vehicle and we can tell you exactly where your vehicle is located,” said Jones.

Here's what you should do. First, call 311 in D.C. They will take your license plate and tell you where your car is. If you go online at http://dpw.dc.gov/service/locate-towed-vehicle and pay your $100 tow fee by midnight, you have until Tuesday to pick up your car without getting hit with a $20 a day storage fee.

The impound lot in located in Southwest D.C. off of 295. The lot will be closed over the weekend as well as Monday due to President's Day. But remember, you can pay online and save on some of those impound fees.
