Thaw warning: Protecting your home from a leaky roof

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

A warning for homeowners as the warmer temperatures approach - take a look at your roof! One expert is predicting big, leaky problems after the buildup of ice and snow.

"The reason why this year's particularly bad is because the snow never really got off the roof, so it's been building up for a month and a half," says Robert Allen, president of Allen Brothers roofing company in Rochester Hills.

He says if you have ice built up on your house, you need to clear a path for the water to run off the roof otherwise it will back up underneath your shingles.

His workers use calcium chloride to get the job done. Allen says you can get a roof rake and clear the snow and ice off yourself, or hire someone for about $600.
