NYC introduces 'extra-large' condom

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Did you know it's not only Valentine's Day but also National Condom Awareness Day? Wink wink.

In honor of the two events, New York City health officials have unveiled the new look of the NYC-branded condoms, which are distributed for free in thousands of locations all over the city.

And for the first time, you can choose from a standard condom size and an "extra-large" one called the NYC KYNG Condom. Both are from LifeStyles, and will be available in time for summer, the city says.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has been distributing free condoms in the city for decades. The program, which gives out about 38 million free condoms per year, is part of an effort to curb the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and reduce unwanted pregnancies, especially among teenagers.

"The NYC Condom Program has been immensely successful in promoting and encouraging safer sex," Dr. Mary Bassett, the city's health commissioner, said in a statement. "We anticipate that New Yorkers will love the new look and appreciate the new size option. These high-quality condoms will help all New Yorkers protect themselves and their partners."

The condoms will be available bars, clubs, restaurants, nail salons, barber shops, hospitals, clinics, and community-based organizations.

If you want some free condoms, you can call 311 or visit nyc.gov/condoms to find a location.

The Hess triangle is a tiny piece of private property in Greenwich Village. Manhattan historian Joyce Gold explained the origins of the property: After World War I, New York City seized a beautiful residence and tore it down so it could extend Seventh Avenue and the west side subway below it. The city left the building's owner only a tiny scrap of property so small it requested he donate the triangle to make way for a sidewalk. The man refused, took the city to court and won.
