Barbie Will Be On Sports Illustrated Cover

Posted: Updated:

Barbie has had many careers, a dance teacher, a doctor, a teacher. However, it seems she's landed a dream job.

She's modeling for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition.

Barbie's controversial figure will appear on the cover of the magazine's 50th anniversary swimsuit issue for a campaign called "Unapologetic."

She'll appear next to models including Brooklyn Decker, Heidi Klum and Christie Brinkley. The campaign gives models a chance to show who they are, despite the scrutiny they face.

Mattel, the company behind Barbie, reportedly hopes the pictures will boost Barbie's image because she has faced constant criticism about her looks and body. Barbie, despite being a signature toy for children, has declined in popularity in recent years.

However, some think this move sends a bad message to girls. For example, on Twitter, in response to the #unapologetic hashtag, some users were criticizing Mattel.

Maggie Freleng wrote, "Ladies, we are officially no better than a toy. Barbie takes over Sports Illustrated #unapologetic #notbuyingit."

Cheryl Baker wrote, "seriously? #unapologetic? @SI_Swimwear & @Mattel taking objectification of women to new heights"

However, some people supported or made comments poking fun at people taking offense.

For example, Katie Sigurdson wrote, "When you're 6 years old you are not thinking about Barbies unrealistic dimensions it's just a doll people! #Unapologetic #BarbieOnSI"

A-Flo teased, "I hate GI Joe..unreal expectations for men. #Mattel #unapologetic."

The magazine hits stands on Tuesday, and Barbie will be on select covers.
