Is It Your Thyroid?

It's a  tiny gland in your neck that has tremendous power over how you look and feel.  Your thyroid.   If it is over-active you might experience a racing heart, insomnia, anxiety and tremors.  If it's underactive, look out for weight gain, dry skin, brittle nails, depression, carpal tunnel syndrome and intolerance to cold.

Santa Monica Endocrinologist Dr. Joseph Pinzone appeared on Studio 11 LA and talked about how foods we normally consider healthy can  adversely impact the thyroid.  For people with borderline thyroid issues, here's what he says about foods that you might want to limit.

 

1.       Kale: Kale, a cruciferous vegetable, contains Goitrogens, which can function as a natural thyroid medication – making it underactive, or even causing it to enlarge (Goiter).

2.       Cauliflower: Cauliflower has a high thiocyanate content. Thiocyanates make it harder for the thyroid to absorb iodine, which is required for normal function.

3.       Soybeans: Soybeans contain soy flavonoids, which reduce the activity of thyroid peroxidase – the enzyme required to insert iodine into the thyroid hormone.

4.       Apples: Apples contain high levels of quercetin, a chemical that reduces the activity of hepatic deiodinase – a liver enzyme required to activate the thyroid hormone.

5.       Onions: Onions contain apigenin flavonoids, a potent millet flavonoid which also hinders the activity of thyroid peroxidase, the enzyme that inserts iodine into the thyroid.

 

Dr. Pinzone says there are also foods that can help improve your Thyroid function.

 

1.       Saltwater Fish: Saltwater fish such as Cod or Sardines are rich in iodine, the essential mineral responsible for healthy thyroid function.

2.       Avacados: Avocados have high levels of tyrosine, a non-essential amino acid used to produce hormones in the thyroid (many thyroid medicines contain tyrosine).

3.       Brazil Nuts: Brazil nuts are packed with Selenium, a trace mineral that helps to regulate normal thyroid function.

4.       Summer Squash: Summer squash has lots of zinc and copper, which work together to help with hormone production in the thyroid.

5.       Yogurt: Yogurt is full of vitamins, including Vitamin C and E. Vitamin C is essential to tyrosine metabolism and Vitamin E metabolizes selenium
