Frank Lloyd Wright`s south side building serves Chicago`s budding artists

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

An old Garfield Park building, designed at the turn of the century, has become an unlikely breeding ground for music idols.

It was once a shoe polish factory, but now it houses something a little larger.

"Good Day Chicago's" Natalie Bomke has found it now houses some of the city's brightest rock and roll stars.

It is a Frankenstein of a building, parts interchanged over time and a bit scary.

It was designed by a famous architect in Chicago's Garfield Park neighborhood.

From a shoe polish factory at the turn of the century to a modern day American Idol star maker.

It's rumored that nationally recognized groups like "Local H" once practiced here.

It is a hidden haven for budding artists.

The building is divided into practice rooms that musicians can rent starting around $300 a month.

"Being living in the city you have apartments, high rises getting a thing like a drum kit in there is close to impossible so having a place where it's all musicians is really nice and you can come in here and pound on the drums and there's 10 of us going away and as loud as we are," False Hope Fades drummer, Brian Wyner, said.

False Hope Fades' vocalist Rosie Walker said, "I think it's kind of a romantic place actually just because it is sort of untouched and you can see the history.

It's an example of re-purposing, rock and roll style.

"It lends itself or points to the fact that you know buildings can have second lives right. We're not necessarily making stove and shoe polish anymore, but you know but now it's this place where bands can come and can practice and I think that the concrete probably helps with the acoustics," Chicago Architecture Foundation's Jen Masengarb said.

The building is one of iconic, American architect Frank Lloyd Wright's first experiments in concrete.

His signature square design is stamped on the side of the building.

The building is lasting impression that has stood the test of time, and is now serving the next generation of great artists.

"It's just kind of one of the lost treasures you know maybe of Chicago," Walker said.
