D.C. councilmember and former mayor Marion Barry has been hospitalized at Washington Hospital Center.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray canceled a debate appearance Tuesday night to visit Barry in the hospital.

Barry tweeted late Tuesday night that he is suffering from a urinary tract infection.

The 77-year-old has had a history of medical issues over the last few years.

He was recently released from Howard University Hospital after a 16-day stay last month.

Barry suffers from diabetes and was hospitalized and treated for a drop in blood sugar last April.

In May 2012, the Ward 8 council member was taken to the hospital in Las Vegas after he suffered a blood clot while waiting on a plane.

He was also hospitalized in January 2012 for a minor operation following a urinary tract infection.

Barry is a prostate cancer survivor and underwent a kidney transplant in 2009.
