ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- Police restricted access to streets in a residential neighborhood to search for evidence in a shooting that left a music teacher dead and nearby residents rattled.

Alexandria Police said Tuesday that they were deploying more than 80 recruits to comb for evidence near Ridge Road Drive, where 59-year-old Ruthanne Lodato was shot and killed by an unknown man who knocked on her door. Another woman was also shot and injured.

Police have received hundreds of tips after putting out a composite sketch of a suspect depicting an older white man with a gray beard.

The slaying has caused authorities to search for possible connections in the unsolved killing of transportation planner Ronald Kirby, whose shooting death in November in a nearby neighborhood also remains unsolved.
