GAITHERSBURG, Md. -

Montgomery County police say a person of interest has been identified in the 1975 disappearance of the Lyon sisters.

12-year-old Sheila Lyon and 10-year-old Katherine Lyon went missing on March 25, 1975 after leaving their home to walk over to Wheaton Plaza. Investigators say witnesses saw the girls inside the shopping mall before their disappearance. The girls never returned home.

Police will hold a news conference Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. to discuss the person of interest in this cold case, who was at Wheaton Plaza on the day the girls disappeared.

Police say the person of interest is a convicted child sex offender, who is currently incarcerated. They say he traveled extensively throughout the United States and investigators will be requesting help from the public in gathering information about this person, his associates, and his activities.
