SOCHI TERROR THREAT - This morning Russia's Deputy Prime Minister is promising the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be safe. Despite this, there are fresh concerns today after the U.S. Homeland Security Department warned airlines flying to Russia about terrorists possibly trying to sneak explosives on planes inside tubes of toothpaste. The airlines were warned that explosives could be put together in flight or when arriving at the Olympics. In a statement DHS says the U.S. "isn't aware of a specific threat to the homeland at this time." adding it "regularly shares information with domestic and international partners, including those associated with international events such as the Sochi Olympics." Delta Airlines is the only U.S. carrier with a direct flight from the US

AIRPORT TOWER STRIKES - How safe are the air traffic controllers that are supposed to keep us safe in the air? On Sept. 12, 2013, lightning struck the control tower at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The. strike injured an air traffic controller at The area airport and it has now raised concerns about a potential vulnerability at airport towers during storms. The Federal Aviation Administration is set to announce it will to inspect hundreds of towers nationwide as result of what happened here. Airports invest millions In constructing new air traffic towers, if the problems are widespread there could be major upgrades ordered at airports nationwide.

IRS BATTLE RESTARTED - 9:30 a.m. When President Obama went on Fox in his pre Super Bowl and said the IRS targeting of conservative groups came out of "bone-headed decisions" and "not even a smidgen of corruption." It was red meat to Republicans who maintain the opposite opinion. Nine months after the scandal broke there are six open investigations into IRS targeting of political groups. The IRS has turned over more than 400,000 pages of documents to congressional investigators. Today, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee grill more Administration officials on what it's doing is doing in regards to the IRS targeting investigation. IMMIGRATION BORDER HEARING - Both parties say they want immigration reform but differ on what paths to take. Republicans for their part say they will not negotiate until U.S. borders are first secured. GOP House leadership releasing a plan last week that outlines a path toward legal status for some of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants now in the United States. The plan includes tighter border security but no plan for those living in the U.S. illegally to achieve citizenship, a deal many conservatives consider amnesty. Today the House Homeland Security Committee holds hearings looking into how the problem isn't close to being solved and how millions of US tax dollars are being wasted on ineffective like faulty computer systems to secure the US border.
