Five common mistakes women make at the gym

Posted: Updated:
Ladies: You're doing it wrong.  Well, you might be.  If you're spending hours at the gym but not seeing any results, we may have the answer as to why.

What you're doing, or maybe what you're not doing, at the gym may be sabotaging you.  Here are five common mistakes women make while they're working out:

1) THEY DON'T DO STRENGTH TRAINING
A lot of women are afraid that if they do strength training, they'll bulk up-- so they avoid weights altogether.  You don't need to lift a lot, but you need to build some lean muscle mass.  It helps burn fat and keeps you strong.

2) THEY DON'T LOOK IN THE MIRROR
Sometimes its hard to look in the mirror-- especially if you don't like what you see.  But looking at yourself in the mirror will help you connect with the muscles you're using, and help you work on your form.  Guys, on the other hand, love to look at themselves in the mirror at the gym.  Follow their lead.

3) YOU'VE GOTTA EAT
It's really, really important to fuel your body right after a workout.  Protein is what you should reach for.  Protein shakes are good and they're popular, but you can find it in lots of foods-- so decide what you're hungry for and try not to eat too much of it.

4) DON'T HOLD ON TO THE MACHINE
When you're doing cardio, resist the urge to hold onto the machine! It takes the pressure off your core-- which makes the work you're doing easier.  Don't cheat yourself!

5) DON'T ZONE OUT DURING CARDIO

By watching TV or reading a magazine, you're not focused on your workout-- which means you're not pushing yourself.  You're also burning fewer calories.  Instead, set the machine to push you with an interval program that will automatically speed up the intensity, get your heart rate up, and help you burn more calories.
