Dance for straight A students raises questions at Montgomery Co. middle school

Posted: Updated:

Straight A students at Eastern Middle School were invited to a dance party as a reward for good grades, but fallout over who was excluded is upsetting some parents.

The party, complete with a DJ, free pizza, soda and a game room, started during the final period of the school day Tuesday for straight A students.

Students who got A's, B's and C's could attend after the pizza was served and after classes were over.

Some "A" students who talked to FOX 5 said they enjoyed the party, but felt it was unfair to students whose grades were not as good.

One parent of an "A" student said he could understand if students who got lower grades were disappointed, but that the party might serve as incentive for them to work harder. Another parent said she doubted if a pizza party and dance would be incentive for students to get better grades.

A spokesperson for Montgomery County Public Schools says "recognitions are decided at the school level in collaboration with the school community." She suggested that parents with questions bring them up with their principal and other officials at their school.
