Viral Video: Arizona teen asks Miley Cyrus to prom

Posted: Updated:

Prom is still a few months away, but a valley teen already knows who he wants to take to the dance. It might take some time and convincing because he's asking singer Miley Cyrus to be his prom date.

Asking someone to the prom is always a bit of a nerve-racking experience, but this valley high school student is going big.  He's a huge Miley Cyrus fan and he's asking the singer to the prom in YouTube video that's gone viral.

Arcadia High School junior Matt Peterson posted the video to YouTube Friday night asking Cyrus to the upcoming prom and to his surprise, the video quickly went viral.

"On Friday, at like 10:00 it was at 6,000 views," said Peterson.  "And then at 11:00, it had 9,000 views.  From there, it's now at 75,000 views."

Matt and Miley go way back to 2009.  She was on the JohnJay and Rich radio show.  She picked him out of the crowd -- the only boy in a crowd of screaming girls -- when one of Miley's people handed him a phone.

"I'm like, hello -- and she's like, hey, this is Miley - I want you to come hang out with me and I just start screaming," he said.

Then six months later, Miley stopped a concert when she saw Matt sitting in the front row.

Matt and Miley have both changed a lot since that moment.

"It's the most embarrassing thing in my whole life.. totally embracing that it was humiliating.."

In his bedroom, Matt has a collection of Miley memorabilia and says even though it may seem a little unusual, he's proud to say he's still one of Miley's biggest fans.  And hopefully soon, she'll be his date to the prom.

"And I embrace the fact that this isn't normal. I'm a 17 year old boy who's obsessed with Miley. I mean I'm making fun of myself and I hope people realize that as well," he said.

As of Feb. 3, the video has more than 81,000 views.  Matt has also put it on Twitter with the hashtag #miley prom.  Monday was his first day back at school since it was posted and he says reaction has been great. He got high fives and people rooting for him.
