A convicted murderer who escaped from a Michigan prison and carjacked a woman Sunday was arrested in northwest Indiana Monday afternoon.

Michael David Eliot, 40, was arrested by LaPorte County Sheriff's deputies about 5:30 p.m., La Porte, Ind., police said in a release.

Officers initially responded to a vehicle theft at Aero Metals, 402 Darlington St., where the owner of a black 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo had let his car idling unattended, police said.

The owner came back outside to see it pulling out of a parking space and called police, who chased after the car, police said.

LaPorte County Sheriff's deputies took over the chase after it left the city limits, and used Stop Sticks to halt the vehicle, sheriff's police said in a release. He tried to run away from the vehicle, but was arrested.

He had carjacked a woman before reaching Indiana, but she was able to escape and call police after they stopped at a gas station just south of the state line, a release on the Michigan Department of Corrections website said.

He got away in a red 2004 Jeep Liberty, which was found abandoned Monday afternoon in a parking lot in Shipshewana, Ind., prison officials said.

Elliot, a convicted quadruple murderer, escaped from Ionia Correctional Facility in Michigan Sunday where he was serving four life sentences, according to police and prison officials.

He is now also facing charges of felony motor vehicle theft and resisting law enforcement in Indiana, and is being held in the LaPorte County Jail without bond, sheriff's officials said.

The prison is located about 30 miles east of Grand Rapids, Mich.
