Some suburbs face salt shortage with snow on the way

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The snow expected to hit the Chicago area on Tuesday may cause more problems than usual in some suburbs experiencing a salt shortage, where it's proving difficult to get more.

In order to ensure that major roads get salt in Aurora, the side streets will not be getting as much salt as usual. In Naperville, neighborhood streets will be coated with a mixture of sand and salt, and the focus will be on particularly dangerous spots like hills and intersections.

In contrast, it looks like Chicago has a good supply of salt on hand. The city gets fresh shipments of salt almost every day.

So far, the city of Chicago has already gone through 289,000 tons of salt this winter. They say they continually replenish their supply throughout the season.

Officials say that salt comes from three main suppliers: Detroit Salt, Morton Salt, and North America Salt.
