Gina's People: Comedy For Causes

Posted: Updated:

We all know laughter is good for the soul. Well, our FOX 11 viewer of the week says it's even better if we combine laughter with giving back to the community.

Laniea Dominguez is on a mission to persuade local comedians to donate a little bit of their time to raise money for different causes.  Dominguez started 'Comedy for Causes' four years ago when her church was having financial problems. She says, "I was afraid church wouldn't be there anymore. That's a place that I go and I need my church to be there.  So I thought, how can I help them make money? So I offered to do a comedy for causes show." Since then, Dominguez has done 20 comedy shows, raising anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000.  Dominguez says, "There was a little girl, she was 4 years old and she had passed away. The parents didn't have money for her funeral. So, we raised more than enough for that."

Comedy for Causes is a side project for Laniea. She hopes to someday make it her full time job, taking it nationwide.

Every Monday, we recognize people and organizations making a difference in the community. If you know of someone who should be recognized, here's how to let us know:

Gina's People: We want to hear from you!

Gina has seen her share of people throughout Southern California – real characters with real stories many making a difference each day with little to no recognition. These are Gina's People, hometown heroes who quietly go about making Southern California and the world a better place for all of us.

If you know a person or a group who deserves some recognition, please fill out this form which goes directly to Gina.

Help her tell the stories of the people and groups who make a big difference each day.

Hell on earth, that's how some doctors describe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa also known as E.B. It's a horrible genetic disease that Nicky Zahorcak was born with. A lot of his skin is raw, the slightest touch can cause blisters that quickly spread. He says, "Right now, all the bandages that you see everywhere even on my sides, they're all raw skin." His mother Silvia says very few people know about this rare condition and she wants to change that.
