CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A driver killed in a crash that injured seven other people early Monday in the Logan Square neighborhood was intoxicated, an autopsy found.

The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. when a Mazda Protege traveling southbound on Kimball Avenue failed to stop at a red light and hit a Buick LeSabre traveling westbound on Fullerton Avenue, police News Affairs said.

The wreck went off the curb and hit a building on the northwest corner of West Fullerton and North Kimball avenues, authorities said.

Eight people -- all adults -- were seriously injured in the crash, according to Juan Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department. Three people were extricated from vehicles by the fire department.

Omar Davilla, 27, of the 2200 block of North Lorel Avenue, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He was pronounced dead there at 6:21 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

He had been driving the Mazda, police said.

An autopsy Tuesday found Davilla died of multiple injuries from the crash and alcohol intoxication was a contributing factor, according to the medical examiner's office. His death was ruled an accident.

The driver of the Buick was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in "critical but stable" condition, police said.

Six other passengers from the Mazda were taken to area hospitals, including one taken to Stroger Hospital, two taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, two taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and one other person was also taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police and fire officials said.

None of the passengers injuries are considered to be life-threatening, police said.

The Chicago Police Major Accident Investigations Unit is investigating.
