Winter storm warning issued, more snow on the way for Monday

Posted: Updated:
The D.C. region enjoyed a warm weekend, but things are about to change.  The FOX 5 Weather Team is tracking several storms that will bring winter back to the area this week-- and the first comes just in time for Monday.

FOX 5's Gwen Tolbart says showers will push into the area late tonight.  Although this is a rather weak storm, several inches of snow is expected around the area on Monday, causing travel delays.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for some areas north and west of D.C. from 3 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.  Between 3-6 inches of snow is expected to fall, and temps will drop to the lower 30s on Monday morning.  The warning covers areas in pink on the map above.

Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. - 4 p.m. for some counties further south, including Montgomery, Loudoun, and Howard counties.  The advisory area is indicated in purple on the map above.  Snow accumulations of 2-5 inches are possible in these areas.  Rain is expected to mix with snow before dawn, and change over to all snow by sunrise.  The heaviest snow is expected to fall Monday morning, and it should move out of the area by Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service says roads could become snow-covered and slippery and visibility could be reduced due to snow.

Another storm during the middle of next week could be strong with heavy precipitation. Odds favor mostly rain with that storm, but just enough cold air may be around during the beginning of the storm to bring some ice and snow, especially well north and west of the city.

A third storm is already being monitored for next weekend. For now with that storm the scale is tipped toward a similar outcome to the midweek event.
