Today is Friday, Jan. 31, the 31st day of 2014. There are 334 days left in the year. This is the Chinese New Year of the Horse.

OBAMA EXPIRED UNEMPLOYMENT - 11:30 a.m. President Obama often cites job gains since he took office, but last month the economy only added 74,000 jobs. When Congress went home for Christmas break on December 28th, they did so without extending long term unemployment benefits.  The result? 1.3 million people lost their long-term unemployment benefits. Over the next year, 4.9 million people will get fewer benefits than they otherwise would have. Today, at The White House Obama will hold a roundtable with business leaders after he announces his plan to get Congress to restore the benefits and help the long term unemployed.

NAVY YARD SHOOTER MENTAL RECORDS - 5 months after a tragic day in DC, new insights are coming out about the man responsible. Just says before Aaron Alexis killed 12 people in the Washington  Navy Yard, Veterans Affairs doctors concluded he had no mental health issues. The Associated Press obtained 100 pages of Alexis's VA medical records from his treatment for insomnia. Alexis, the AP concludes, lied so convincingly about his mental state doctors that wrote "no problem there" on his chart. In reality, on Aug. 7 he'd called Rhode Island police saying disembodied voices were harassing him at his hotel using a microwave machine to prevent him from sleeping. Alexis, a federal contractor had access to Washington Navy Yard

2016 PRESIDENTIAL POLL - Does it feels like the 2012 election just finished? Yeah, same here.  But already new polls are weighing in on the 2016 race and a familiar name tops the list.  Hillary Clinton has a huge lead over other Democrats while the Republican field is up in the air. The Washington Post-ABC Poll shows Clinton has the backing of 73% of Democrats overwhelming Vice President Joe Biden at 12%.  Rep. Paul Ryan leads Republicans with 20 percent, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 18 percent and Christie with 13 percent. Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Marco Rubio of Florida were at 12 percent, 11 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

SANDRA FLUKE FOR CONGRESS?  Sandra Fluke was an accomplish Georgetown University law student, and president of the Students for Reproductive Justice group, when she testified before Congress about access to birth control in 2012. But it was when Rush Limbaugh called he "a slut" that Fluke was thrust into the national spotlight and became a symbol of the battle over reproductive rights.  News that longtime Florida Congressman Henry Waxman is retiring, may now open a door for Fluke to become a member of Congress herself. Fluke says that she is "strongly" considering a bid for the seat.
