Prince George's Co. Public Schools denies student was beaten unconscious during recess

Posted: Updated:
DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. -

It is a story that outraged a lot of FOX 5 viewers -- a 7-year-old student whose parents say she was knocked to the ground and beaten until she was unconscious during indoor recess at Thomas Claggett Elementary School.

Her outraged parents demanded answers even after the principal sent home a letter saying a child was injured, taken to the hospital and released.

Phersephone Holland and Rodney Smyers are still upset after school officials released a statement late Thursday saying their investigation into the incident was finished.

The school system concluded there was no beating or bullying and says investigators found a student was hit by a football during recess and fell to the ground and sustained a head injury.

The parents dispute that.

They took their daughter back to Children's Hospital for a follow-up visit. They say there were told she had sustained a mild concussion and was cleared to return to classes.

The parents have arranged for her to attend classes at a different school in the county starting Friday.
