Signs urge drivers to 'Drive Like Your Kids Live Here'

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Could a sign make you rethink the way you're driving? Red signs with a simple message are popping up in communities across the country -- including some in the D.C. region. They say very clearly, "DRIVE LIKE YOUR KIDS LIVE HERE."

Even if you don't have kids, the sign still sends a strong message. FOX 5 spotted several around schools in northwest D.C., and along neighborhood streets. They can be ordered online at www.drivelikeyourkidslivehere.com.

Petulia Pugliares is the founder of the website. She told FOX 5 that after having two near-misses of her own while walking in her neighborhood, it was time for a change.

The signs have been spotted all across the U.S., and even in Canada and Australia. In total, about 20,000 have been mailed out, and some local governments have bought them in bulk.

AAA spokesman John Townsend told FOX 5 he loves the signs. He says too often, children are hit by speeding or distracted drivers.

"It signals to drivers that they need to slow down in school zones, and also near playgrounds," said Townsend.

This Saturday, new crosswalk cameras will be added to D.C.'s very large, automated traffic enforcement effort. Maybe with the threat of big fines -- and big red signs as reminders -- area streets will be a bit safer.

The money raised by sales of the signs is put back into businesses.
