Philly Officer Shoots Man After Drug Bust And Struggle

Posted: Updated:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a Philadelphia officer shot and wounded a suspect who allegedly reached for an officer's gun during a struggle after fleeing a drug bust.

Authorities say patrol officers saw what they believed to be a drug transaction at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday in west Philadelphia.

The officers were trying to arrest the 23-year-old suspect when he fled, jumping over a six-foot fence into the yard of a home.

Police say the officers pursued and one of them struggled with the suspect, who punched and kicked him and then tried to take the officer's gun from its holster.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said the other officer fired once, striking the suspect in the torso.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and later listed in stable condition.
