Police Questioning POI In Serial Overbrook Robberies

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A person of interest is being questioned by police in connection with a robbery spree targeting women in West Philadelphia. There have been six robberies in three weeks in the Overbrook area, according to police! Investigators say they were able to track down the person of interest through one of the victims' stolen cell phones.

Some people in the Overbrook section of the city were on edge for the past few days after hearing that a man seen on surveillance was attacking women from behind at knife point.

Look closely, in one case police say the suspect approached a 60-year-old woman from behind, put her in a choke hold and said don't turn around or I will shoot you. He then threw her to the ground and took off with her groceries and purse, investigators say. This attack happened around 8 o'clock at night.

"I'm glad you told me this because I come from work every day at night," Leah McClelland of Overbrook said. "I'm kind of nervous and need to watch my surroundings."

Police say six women in this one neighborhood have been held up in the last 3 weeks. In one case, a 51 year old female was attacked with her grandchildren by her side.

The robber threatened her by saying "you don't want anything to happen to these kids" and then lunged at the woman and the children, forcing them to drop their bags.

In each case police tell us that the suspect got away with some goods--the women were not hurt--but seriously frightened.

"I'm normally not the type of person to get a pocket knife but you need to protect yourself if you're walking alone to school or work you want to know you'll be okay," McClelland said.
