DCPS Teacher of the Year invited to State of the Union by First Lady Michelle Obama

WASHINGTON -

D.C. Public Schools' 2013 Teacher of the Year is being honored with an exciting opportunity on Tuesday night. She has been invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to sit with her at the State of the Union address.

Kathy Hollowell-Makle has been a teacher for D.C. Public Schools for over 15 years. She currently teaches at Simon Elementary School in Southeast D.C.

As you would imagine, instead of grading papers, Hollowell-Makle is quite excited about this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“It's a great honor as an American citizen,” she said. “It's a great honor as a D.C. public school teacher and just as a teacher in general.”

Hollowell-Makle has been teaching at Simon Elementary for the last four years and more than 80 percent of her students advanced two or more reading levels last year.
