PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Investigators say Maquel Morris was a passenger on a Greyhound bus headed from Los Angeles to Dallas.  Several hours into the trip, he allegedly attacked the driver, causing the bus to crash on Interstate 10 near Tonopah.

Morris was first in a hospital after the incident and is now in jail.  That's where he spoke to FOX 10 Monday afternoon.

The 25-year-old boarded that Greyhound bus in Los Angeles.  He was headed home to the Memphis area to see his family.

Near Tonopah, the Department of Public Safety says Morris rushed the driver's compartment of the bus and tried to grab the steering wheel.

A passenger intervened and the driver was able to prevent the bus from slamming into oncoming traffic.

A DPS officer at the scene described Morris' behavior as erratic and according to court documents, firefighters refused to take him to a hospital because of the way he was acting.  Instead, he went in the back of a patrol car.

The suspect told us he feared for his life on the bus.  He thought someone he used to work with was after him.

Here is his response when I asked him why this happened and what he has to say to all those injured passengers:

"I say I apologize.  'Cause I wanted to get off the bus."

Why not just wait until the next stop?

"I didn't think there was going to be a next stop," replied Morris.

About 50 people were on that bus and half of them had to be taken to a hospital.

Morris is looking at a number of charges, including 25 counts of endangerment.
