Firefighters in Anne Arundel County may have very well saved the life of a 10-year-old girl. They rescued her after she fell 30 feet into an old well Monday afternoon.
Shane Ferrara was in his backyard along 207th Street in Pasadena, Md., when he heard terrified screams from the little girls next door.
"I heard one girl say, ‘she's in the hole, she's in the hole,’" he says.
The children had been playing with a 10-year-old who lives on the other side of their house when the little girl somehow fell into the well.
Anne Arundel County Fire Captain Michael Pfaltzgraff says it appears there was some deteriorated plywood covering the hole, which collapsed under her weight.
The hole is about three feet in diameter, which was wide enough for them to lower a firefighter to the bottom.
"The lucky thing for us was the size of the well,” says Pfaltzgraff. “We were able to lower a provider in without having to dig another hole."
He continued, "It was about 25 minutes until we had somebody down to her, and then about five minutes until we had her on ground."
The air temperature is about 50 degrees at that depth, but with possible wet conditions, hypothermia was of great concern.
The little girl was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
