AAA Mid-Atlantic: Nearly 10,000 calls for service since start of winter storm

BOWIE, Md. -

The cold temperatures have left many drivers going nowhere fast. AAA Mid-Atlantic is reporting nearly 10,000 calls for service since the snow fall and arctic blast set in on Tuesday.

Battery technicians like Glen Adams have been working almost non-stop. Adams says the majority of calls have been from car owners who are having car battery problems and others who have locked themselves out of their cars while trying to warm up their vehicles.

Adams says this is the busiest he has been since the blizzard of 2010.

One of the calls Wednesday night came from David Rogofsky. The Bowie, Md., man says he got a rude awakening when he tried to venture out in his 2001 Honda accord.

"I was off yesterday. I worked at home today. I was just going out to go to Popeyes and it didn't start,” he says.

Rogofsky's car needed a new battery. He says he doesn't mind spending the money because it's peace of mind knowing that he won't have problems when he goes to take his children to school and then head off to work.

Adams says people can avoid the car problems in the cold weather by making sure to have their battery checked and cleaned whenever they have their car serviced.

He says it is often not done and that is what can lead to problems when the freezing temperatures set in.
