Man stabs pit bull attacking Chihuahua

CONYERS, Ga. -

Two dogs are dead after a dog owner stabbed a neighbor's pit bull in an attempt to protect his Chihuahua.

Conyers resident Shirley Cronan says her dog Gizmo was in the front yard of Ricky Anderson when a pit bull attacked.

"I heard something dive through the bushes...and I turned around and the dog hit me and it knocked me over on my back and shoulders. I couldn't hardly get up and when I got up, he had Gizmo in his mouth," Anderson aid.

Anderson said the animal wouldn't let his 7-pound dog out of its grip, so Anderson did what he felt gave Gizmo his only chance at survival.

"I was on my knees and I pulled my knife out. It was all I had on me," Anderson said.

Anderson says it wasn't until he stabbed the dog in the neck that he finally let go of Gizmo. But by then, it was too late. The dog they've owned since 6 weeks old was gone.

"What he does, when we eat, he sat here and prayed. When we say our prayers over our food, he prayed with us," Anderson said. "That's how good of a dog he was. He wasn't a dog, he was our child."

According to Anderson and the police report, after Anderson stabbed the pit bull, the neighbors threatened him with a gun.

The neighbors would not talk to FOX 5 about the incident.

The pit bull was euthanized and Rockdale County Animal Control cited its owners for failure to keep the dog under control. Meanwhile, Gizmo's owners say all they have left is the small grave where the small dog was laid to rest.

"They can't give you nothing for your broken heart, and my heart has been broken and it's like in pieces," said Cronan.
