Crews battle frigid temps during massive sinkhole repair downtown

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Crews are working to fix a massive sinkhole in downtown Detroit near the Renaissance Center and the Coleman A. Young building.

A water main break cased parts of Jefferson near Randolph to give way on Sunday. The hole started out the size of a manhole.

The sinkhole comes during perhaps Detroit's busiest attraction, The North American International Auto Show, and also as another round of frigid air makes its way into Michigan.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather warning for much of Michigan, forecasting brisk winds and frigid temperatures. The Fox 2 Weather Authority team says to expect a high of only 10 degrees Tuesday.

Meanwhile, crews have Randolph closed at Jefferson, along with the two westbound lanes of Jefferson. Motorists who use I-375 to get downtown are being asked to use the Lodge Freeway instead.

Officials say it could take a few days to repair.
