Christie cancels inauguration party

Posted: Updated:

Chris Christie will be sworn in for a second term as Governor of New Jersey in Trenton but the weather is forcing him to cancel an inauguration party on Ellis Island.

His day was to start with a service at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church followed by an inauguration party Tuesday night inside the historic Great Hall on Ellis Island.

Organizers have canceled the party that was scheduled for Tuesday night on Ellis Island. There's fear heavy snow would pose a travel hazard.

Catered food for the event will be donated to food pantries in the Jersey City area.

While most of Ellis Island is considered part of New Jersey, the Great Hall is actually part of New York State.  The US Supreme Court divided Ellis Island in 1998 after a dispute between the two states over ownership.

Over the weekend, Christie said he's already learning lessons from the growing 'Bridgegate' scandal, and said it makes him even more ready for a potential presidential run in 2016.

"We have to be willing to play outside the red and blue boxes," Christie said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press. "We have to be willing to reach out to others who look or speak differently than us."

Christie is also expected to return to a favorite theme: Washington gridlock.

"We cannot fall victim to the attitude of Washington, D.C.," he said in the prepared remarks. "The attitude that puts political wins ahead of policy agreements."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
