Fitz File: Monday, January 20

Posted: Updated:

Today is Monday, Jan. 20, the 20th day of 2014. There are 345 days left in the year. This is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

MARYLAND HEALTHCARE WOES - There's more evidence that Maryland's state-run Healthcare program is stumbling.  State officials announced Sunday a programming error sent Medicaid sign-up packets for more than 1,000 people to wrong addresses. The packets have names, birthdays & Medicaid identification numbers of the people.  On the bright side, they don't have Social Security numbers's financial or medical data.  But given the recent site healthcare site glitches, It's another thing to explain for an O'Malley-Brown administration that's been saying things were being fixed.

BUSH AIDE EYES VIRGINIA SENATE - Following a 3-way loss in Virginia's last state-wide elections (Governor, Lt. Gov, Attorney General) Republicans could be forgiven for not exactly being thrilled about the prospect of facing popular former Democratic Gov. And current U.S. Senator Mark Warner as he gears up for re-election. But Virginia's Republican bench is getting new blood in the form of a former top aide to Pres. George W Bush, Ed Gillespie. As Bush's image has undergone a improvement, from his 25% approval rating in 2009 (he didn't go to the last 2 GOP conventions)  Republicans like Gillespie are feeling more comfortable highlighting their Bush connections.

NEW CHRISITE ALLEGATIONS - If you thought things couldn't get worse for NJ Governor Chris Christie as he struggles with his "BridgeGate" scandal, well guess again. The Mayor of Hoboken NJ  met with federal prosecutors Sunday after she charged members of Gov. Chris Christie's staff threatened to withhold Hurricane Sandy aid from her city if she did not approve a major real estate project.  Mayor Dawn Zimmer met with staff from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark, providing a copy of her daily journal and other documents. Christie's could temps more Republicans to take a look at the 2016 Presidential race.

IRAN NUKES HALTED? Is the countdown clock on Iran getting the bomb about to dial back? This morning Iran announced it has stopped its most sensitive uranium enrichment activities on Monday as part of a deal with world powers, lessening the immediate concerns over Iran's nuke ambitions. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed Iran's centrifuges were disconnected.  State broadcasts said international inspectors were present Monday when Iran began implementing its obligations under the historic deal reached in Geneva Nov. 24.
