MCSO: Inmate kills cell mate at the Lower Buckeye Jail

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

An inmate is dead after being beaten and stabbed by his cell mate in his cell at the Lower Buckeye Jail.

MCSO Detention Officers discovered the body of 50 year-old John Klatt after his cell mate and the suspect, 20 year-old Nike Black alerted officers that Klatt was not breathing and was bleeding.

Investigators say that Klatt was beaten and stabbed in the eye with a small pencil by Black.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that his team of homicide detectives and jail crime investigators have been at the jail all day and will likely charge Black with murder.

A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office said that Black was serving a sentence domestic violence charge and Klatt was serving a sentence for sex crimes involving minors.
