CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Supporters of gun control call the billboard outrageous, and perhaps that's exactly what the company behind the campaign is hoping for.

Yet, the product they are pushing is legal. It's an adapter that makes assault rifles more fun to fire according to users, but potentially a lot more dangerous if in the wrong hands.

One-hundred-thirty-seven-thousand cars a day drive by this billboard on the outbound Stevenson and it's no doubt caught a lot of people's attention.

The billboard is touting assault rifles as "Pure American," as American as baseball and apple pie.

It also wraps the campaign in the American Flag and Second Amendment in one corner of the billboard and the Christian Fish and the Statue of Liberty on the other.

Annette Holt, who lost her son to gun violence, calls the billboard outrageous.

" I just think it's inappropriate to advertise something like that, if you just want to advertise a gun, advertise a gun, but don't put things with it that are going to encourage young people, especially teenagers and children that that's what goes together with it because it doesn't it," Holt said.

Slide Fire, the company behind the advertisement, has a demonstration video on its website, showing how it's product can effectively modify an assault rifle from semi to fully automatic.

Gun dealer Louie Asanon of Pops and Guns sells the product and demonstrated how it works..

"It will seem like it's an automatic weapon, but its' actually what we call a bump fire, so you're pushing forward, causing it to come back and forth rapidly, so you're causing a rapid fire in a sense that way," Asanon said.

All it takes is changing out the stock and adding a trigger adapter, something that in the wrong hands could cause serious concerns for police and public safety. But supporters say law abiding users just enjoy the fun of rapid fire shooting.

American Pie, so to speak. Guns are American, you got the Second Amendment which everybody stands by, you and it's right to bear arms and it's just another feature of bearing arms, so to speak," Asanon said.
