Pilots that landed at wrong airport give reason for mishap

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

The pilots who landed a Southwest Airlines plane at the wrong airport said there's a reason for that.

The pilots took off from Midway Airport on Sunday, heading for Branson, Missouri.

They landed at a different airport seven miles away.

Why?

Only one of the pilots had ever landed in Branson, and that was once during the day.

When they spotted the lights at the wrong runway and radioed the tower, they were given the all-clear to land.

That's when they stopped relying on automatation and landed based on what they could see.

They didn't even realize until they were on the ground that they were at the wrong spot.
