Parents charged after 1-year-old found alone in unlocked apartment in Harrison Twp.

Two parents in Harrison Twp. are facing jail time after leaving their 1-year-old home alone. The situation was discovered by the child's grandfather who took matters into his own hands, which caught investigators by surprise.

As investigators began interviewing the Charelle Woods and Aaron Digs about their missing son Thursday night, their stories did not appear to add up. Instead of leaving the toddler in his crib while she worked on her broken-down car outside, as Woods had originally told investigators, she actually drove Diggs to his job in Detroit and left the child home alone. Neighbors say a three-year-old sibling was brought along in the car while the toddler slept at the apartment.

Investigators say the children's grandfather showed up to the home and found the toddler alone in the unlocked apartment. The grandfather told police he then took the child, saying the conditions inside were "deplorable," and he was curious how the couple would react. The situation came full circle when the grandfather learned police were searching for the boy, so the grandfather called and confessed he had him all along.

"Who would ever think of leaving a 1-and-a-half-year-old, leaving a baby, any child, whatever age, alone, while you're going to run and go do errands. Totally unacceptable," says Macomb Co. Sheriff Anthony Wickersham.

Woods and Diggs now face fourth-degree child abuse charges and the Department of Human Services is investigating if they are fit to be parents. It's a crime that could ultimately mean jail time, and precious time without their kids if the state decides to take them away.

The magistrate set the bond for Woods at two thousand dollars and Diggs at ten thousand dollars because of his criminal history. Their next court date is set for February 5.
