NEW YORK (AP) - A suspect on trial for the 1987 murder of a Brooklyn woman has been found not guilty.

The jury announced the verdict on Thursday in the trial of Edwin Alcaide, 54, of Manhattan.

Alcaide was arrested in connection with the death of Lisette Torres, 19. The woman was found stabbed multiple times in a car lot near the Gowanus Express in Brooklyn.

Police said the two were acquaintances. They said Alcaide is a registered sex offender with an extensive criminal background whom authorities suspected from the start. He was linked to the 25-year-old crime through DNA testing.

The Daily News reports that jurors said DNA traces found under the victim's fingernails didn't prove that Alcaide stabbed the victim 15 times, only that they may have had a fight.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
