Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

With temperatures quickly dropping, now is the perfect time to ready the yard for winter birds. Feathered friends will appreciate the safe haven from the cold, and bird lovers will enjoy a colorful flurry of activity right at their doorstep!

Winter Plants That Attract Birds

  • Deciduous shrubs and trees have lost their leaves, offering better visibility for bird watching.
  • Long ornamental grasses provides a more natural shelter for birds
  • Crabapples: attracts robins, bluebirds, thrushes, catbirds, cardinals, waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks, finches
  • White Oak: attracts woodpeckers, jays, Wild Turkey, Grouse, Wood Ducks
  • Winter Berries: attracts robins, bluebirds, waxwings

Provide Shelter

  • Myth: You need to take down your bird houses in winter
  • Myth Buster: Bird houses provide shelter from the weather and other night predators. Song birds frequently group together overnight in a bird house, or roosting pockets, to keep warm.

Food

  • Suet
  1. As temperatures fall, high-fat, high-calorie suet is perfect food to help get through the cold nights
  2. This is like an energy bar for birds and perfect for the winter months. It comes in a cake or logs for woodpeckers.
  3. Attracts colorful Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Wrens, Bluebirds, Brown Thrasher, Blue Jays and Mockingbirds.
  • Bird Seed
  1. Different birds prefer different types of seed depending on the size of their beak
  2. To attract the broadest spectrum of birds use Pike Special Blend
  3. Includes sunflower, millet and peanuts which appeals to a wide variety of songbirds.
  4. Provide nectar in feeders for hummingbirds
  5. There is a growing number of hummingbirds that are wintering in the South
  • Filling later in the day ensures evening and early morning food

Bird Bath Care

  • Keep low level of fresh water in bird bath
  • Birds won't bathe in coldest temperatures but will drink the water
  • A bird bath heater or Water Wiggler will help keep it from freezing
