Nationwide, the number of universities offering to cover sex change surgery is growing. 50 universities offer to cover the cost of this procedure, and as of next school year, the University of Maryland may join that list.
The university is expected to choose an insurance provider later this month. When it does, the plan may cover the controversial surgery, which can run to tens of thousands of dollars.
Some faculty and students view this as a growing acceptance of transgender people in the United States.
"Our goal is to have an inclusive environment where all students feel comfortable and are able to obtain the medical care they desire,” said Dr. Sacared Bodison, Director of the school’s University Health Center.
If the university moves forward with this plan, it could add $12 to $15 to the current insurance premium of more than $1,300 a year.
