Today is Wednesday, Jan. 15, the 15th day of 2014. There are 350 days left in the year.

OBAMA TO NORTH CAROLINA - 2:05 pm President Obama kicks off his warm up to the State of the Union today by hitting the road to "Wolfpack Country". The President will deliver remarks at North Carolina State University to announce new steps with the private sector to strengthen the manufacturing sector, boost advanced manufacturing, and attract good jobs with good wages that he says a growing middle class requires. Expect event almost every day for now until the President delivers his speech to Congress and the nation outlining his priorities.

MARYLAND BUDGET REVEAL - 11:00 am If MD Governor Martin O'Malley runs for President in 2016, his role as managing Maryland's finances may be one of his major talking points. Today O'Malley takes the wraps off the new state budget. His staff says it closes the $584 million revenue shortfall without tax or fee increases, supports 48,000 jobs and makes investments in schools, college, and the Chesapeake Bay. Republicans say the priority should be rolling back taxes already raised in previous sessions.

VIRGINIA CIVIL WAR FLAP - The differences between Northern Virginia and the rest of the state often flare up on the subject if The Civil War. Alexandria, a Northern Virginia city steeped in Civil War history, is considering repeal of an old law mandating certain new streets to be named for Confederate generals. City Councilman Justin Wilson introduced legislation for Tuesday night's council meeting to do away with a 1963 law. Wilson said that symbolically, he believes it's a good thing to strip from the code a provision that in some ways glorifies the Confederacy. A hearing is scheduled on the bill January 25th.

DC MAYOR POLL - As Mark Twain would say: reports of Mayor Gray's "political demise" may have been greatly exaggerated. A new Washington Post poll shows Mayor Vincent C. Gray has strongly rebounded in the 18 months since scandal threatened to end his mayoralty, with voters choosing him over all of his Democratic primary challengers. But doubts about Gray’s trustability persist, according to the survey. With just 24% of Democratic voters backing him, his opponents still have a chance to unite voters against the Mayor before the April 1 primary.http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/dc-mayor-vincent-gray-makes-strong-rebound-with-primary-looming/2014/01/14/2e623cee-7c79-11e3-93c1-0e888170b723_story.html
