MLK's family upset about party flyers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Martin Luther King, Jr. day is celebrated on Jan. 20th, but the way some people are using his image to celebrate is drawing ire.

Some party promoters are using Dr. King's image in flyers for boozy nightclub events and his daughter is not happy about it.

One shows King wearing gold chains with a provocatively dressed young woman and bottles of booze. Critics say it makes the civil rights leader look more like a rap star than a promoter of peace and equality.

Another flyer shows a barely covered woman and promises that ladies will drink for free until midnight.

Another shows Dr. King wearing headphones next to a woman in a low cut-dress.

And another shows an enhanced Rev. King wearing a large gold chain, making hand gestures under the headline "Freedom 2 Twerk".

Another, under the headline "Free at Last... everybody 21 & over free till midnight" shows Dr. King in a crown and heavy jewelry.

Bernice King, his daughter and CEO of the King Center in Atlanta, says she is offended by many of the fliers.

"It's one thing if they want to party in celebration. Its another thing when you take his actual image and suggest he is down with it like that," King says.

Most of the flyers are for parties planned for this weekend. Many people have a three-day weekend because King's birthday is a federal holiday.

None of the party promoters were available to respond to inquiries about the flyers.

"I'm sad, really, that it's come to the point where there's a generation that has no appreciation and understanding for what my father stood for," King says. "It suggests to me we've got a lot of work to do to reach them."

Dr. King's family says it is not against celebrating his life, but they don't want young people to forget about the work Dr. King dedicated his life to performing.
