Cobb County group pushes for government transparency

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Before the gavel went down on a new legislative session at the Georgia Capitol on Monday, a group of citizens made a call for more open government.

The group of Cobb County residents formed last year to call bluff on the promises that the Atlanta Braves and county commissioners have made.

"The people of Cobb County that are listening to the commissioners and hearing that taxes are not going to go up, they're delusional. They're going to go up a lot," said Dr. Bill Hudson of the Cobb Citizens for Government Transparency.

The group is trying to stop Cobb County lawmakers from creating a special tax district that would allow more tax money to be spent on the stadium. They're also making a larger point that too often lawmakers make major decisions without public input or, at times, even public knowledge.

"It is also forgotten that we are the government, so when some government agency tells us that they are going to allow us to do something, that quite frankly is offensive to the founders intent and the Constitution of the United States," said Michael Opitz of Madison Forum.

The group, which includes everyone from SCLC leaders to tea party members, says they are unified and are not backing down.

"The common ground for us has been the flaws in what we expect from our government, and that's, guess what: citizen involvement and transparency," said Ben Williams of SCLC Cobb County.
