DC considering legislation to give tax credit to organ donors

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Several D.C. Council members are supporting legislation to help those who want to donate organs to those in need.

Under a proposal being discussed, D.C. would offer a $25,000 tax credit to donors. The donors could use the credit to pay for travel expenses, lost work compensation, life and health care insurance costs.

Councilmember Jack Evans says regulations will be in place to prevent the sale of organs in exchange for the tax credit.

Evans says the finance committee will likely hold future hearings on the proposed bill in the next month or two.
