Woman driving minivan fatally hits pedestrian, slams into building in Hyattsville

Posted: Updated:

Prince George's County police have identified the man who was killed when a woman lost control of her vehicle in Hyattsville Monday morning.

The victim has been identified as Jose Martin Huaman, 24, of Hyattsville.

They have not named the 44-year-old woman whose Ford vehicle jumped a median on Rhode Island Avenue before slamming into him and a storefront. It happened around 7 a.m.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.

Investigators say their preliminary investigation has determined that her car hit an icy patch in the roadway.

There is no word on whether the driver of the vehicle had been speeding.

The I.D. Design Collective had a plate glass window storefront, which the car crashed right into. It is a live-work space, and police say a man, who was in the building at the time of the accident, managed to get out, along with a dog.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission dispatched crews to work on a water main break down the street after the accident. In a statement on its website, WSSC points out the extreme cold snap has caused a high number of water main breaks and leaks in the region. The utility statement says it has not heard from the Prince George's County Police Department, but will cooperate fully in their investigation.

So far, no charges have been filed in the case.
