Coast Guard: Search for missing sailor called off

Posted: Updated:
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -

Rescuers have called off their search for a sailor missing since a Navy helicopter crashed in the ocean off the Virginia coast.

Two people died in yesterday's crash. Two others were hospitalized but one of them has been released. The Navy has declined to identify the survivors.

The Navy says the sailors who died were 29-year-old Lt. Wesley Van Dorn of Greensboro, N.C., and 25-year-old Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian Collins of Truckee, Calif. Van Dorn was a pilot and Collins a crewman. Van Dorn and Collins were among four crew members hoisted from the 42-degree waters yesterday by a Navy helicopter.

The Coast Guard had searched an area of 500 square miles by air and sea for more than 30 hours before calling off the active search.
