Today is Thursday, Jan. 9, the ninth day of 2014. There are 356 days left in the year.

NEW NSA RULES - Can you hear me now? Well, pretty soon the NSA won't if President Obama goes ahead with reports he's about to rein in spying on foreign leaders and limit NSA's access to Americans' phone records.  All of this stems from last years (and probably more to come this year) leaks by former NSA contracted Edward Snowden. One of the big changes could be stripping NSA of its ability to store telephone records from millions of Americans and instead have phone companies or a third party hold the records. The NSA would only be able to access the thru a court order.

GOVERMENT WASTE 9:30  We all remeber the stories about the $500 hammers and the $200 toilet seats. But as Politicians continue to argue on Capitol Hill over spending cuts, there are millions of dollars being wasted.  Take OPM for example, a GAO investigation found $20 million of $80 million arm armed for training programs was wasted through duplication: OPM bought 622 separate human resource systems, 580 financial management systems, and 777 supply chain management systems.  Today the House Oversight Committee is expected to reveal some examples of government waste and what's being done to reign it in. ECONOMIC "PROMISE ZONES" - 2:40 pm Yes, the name sounds a little odd but The White House is hoping its latest idea to jump start the economy catches on. Simply put the President is announces today the creation of these special economic zones. Obama announced the Promise Zones  at last year’s State of the Union Address, to partner with local communities and businesses to create jobs, increase economic security, expand access to educational opportunities and quality, affordable housing, and improve public safety.  The 5 areas are in in San Antonio, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Southeastern Kentucky, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

CHRISTIE 2016 DETOURED - 11:00 am One day you're up, one day you're down.  Expect a sidewinder of a Press Conference at the New Jersey Statehouse today as Governor Chris Christie tries to explain why his staff closed down roads at the George Washington Bridge to harass a North Jersey Democratic Mayor who wouldn't endorse Christie for reelection.  The Governor had been riding a wave of good press as the widely assumed front runner for the Republican 2016 nomination. That could change now if Christie isn't able to stop the growing scandal which now the emails has touched down directly I his own office. What did he know, when did he know it?

Today in history:

In 1913, Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, was born in Yorba Linda, Calif.

In 1914, the fraternity Phi Beta Sigma was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

In 1987, the White House released a Jan. 1986 memorandum prepared for President Ronald Reagan by Lt. Col. Oliver L. North showing a link between U.S. arms sales to Iran and the release of American hostages in Lebanon.

Quote of the day:

"If anyone tells you that America's best days are behind her, they're looking the wrong way." President George H.W. Bush
