Metro-North expansion plan

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants the Metro-North Railroad to expand to New York City's Penn Station following recommendations made in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

Cuomo announced the Penn Station Access Project proposal Wednesday during his State of the State address in Albany.

The plan calls for opening four new Metro-North stations in the Bronx, bypassing the Mott Haven Junction and the Harlem River Lift Bridge. If a natural disaster disabled those two points, commuters could travel into and out of Manhattan via the new route.

A few years ago, the Harlem River Lift Bridge was almost destroyed by fire.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's budget already includes $40.6 million for planning the project. He says the state and the MTA will seek federal funding to expand the nation's second-largest commuter railroad.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
